Recommendations of Fasting - Matn of Abu Shujaa^

The First Matter

Ibn Hibbaan narrated with an authentic chain of narration that if the Prophet, Sallallaahu ^alayhi wa sallam, were fasting, he would not pray until he would be given some rutab (dates at a particular stage) or water, and so he would eat or drink. And if that were in the winter, he would not pray until they would come to him with dates or water.

The best is to break the fast with rutab. If one does not have that, then with dates; and if he does not have that, then with busr; and if he does not have that, then with water. This is because of what at-Tirmidhiyy narrated that the Prophet, Sallallaahu ^alayhi wa sallam, would break his fast with rutab before praying. If he did not have that, then with dates, and if he did not have that, then he would sip some water. It is recommended to say after breaking ones fast:

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ، وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ، وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

Allaahumma laka Sumtu wa ^alaa rizqika afTart. DhahabaDH-DHama’u wabtallati-l-^urooqu wathabata-l-ajru, in shaa’ Allaah.

which means: “O Allaah, for You I have fasted and with Your provision I have broken my fast. The thirst has gone away, the veins have been moistened, and the reward is confirmed, in shaa’ Allaah.”
